Police and Emergency Service Volunteers have located the body of a man, believed to be that of a missing 61-year-old Victorian man.
Superintendent Craig Barrett said a helicopter involved in the search sighted the body, approximately one kilometre from an abandoned vehicle.
“The body is yet to be formally identified but we believe we have located the missing Victorian man,” he said.
“Tennant Creek Police, NTES volunteers and members from the Territory Response Group have been conducting extensive air and land searches since first light this morning."
Jozef Koconda, 61, was on a driving holiday in the Territory and his abandoned black Mercedes Benz car was found abandoned on the Barkly Highway near Tennant Creek last Friday.
Police were alerted on Monday.
“Tennant Creek Police have been conducting extensive enquiries in the area and liaising with Victoria Police since the abandoned vehicle was reported," Superintendant Barrett said.
The Mercedes had a trailer attached to it containing personal belongings.
Police investigations are continuing and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
