EXCLUSIVE: The Nationals are demanding the government spend an extra $1.3 billion on drought-affected communities and have declared it a “seminal issue” at the next election.
The plan which was endorsed by the Nationals on Monday, has been leaked in frustration to Sky News. Party members said if it was not implemented, One Nation would excoriate them at the ballot box.
The proposal - outlined in a 10-point plan endorsed by the party room on Monday - called for drought-affected councils to be given $10 million each.
The money would be spent by a specially convened "drought committee", comprising of local councilors, the mayor, state and federal MPs and other community leaders. But while the plan was endorsed by the party room on Monday, Nationals members told Sky News they did not know if or how the proposal would become a reality.
