She’s hardly proven the wherewithal to dismantle and then reform an entire government department. Her role like all ministers is one of administration, you could place her or Linda in any minister’s position and their job descriptions would remain the same. The product (in this case humans) matters little.
Any Minister of Community Services would first have to acknowledge that private industry is profiting from child/family abuse and that the industry itself is not going to change on its own. To begin the private sector would have to be dismissed from Out of Home Care. This would mean state fighting church and announcing itself not only a secular department but one that refuses to continue to fund systems that benefit financially from failing our children.
I believe hell will probably freeze over before Pru does the right thing by families and the children already displaced.
I do not believe she will prefer a more transparent/responsible/accountable department anymore than those that have gone before her.
Do we really believe it is the caseworkers that are at fault? Complaints about their individual faults certainly succeeds in distracting people so that we don’t focus on the big stuff like system and law changes and management or anything radical like consequences for not acting legally and within current policy.
NSGBD there is a huge difference between someone wanting to hear you talk and someone promising to act on what is urgently needed. Politicians always listen; listening is easy. We’re concerned about the lives of 16,000 NSW children and their families, when there is such a concern it is probably action that is immediately required.
